Signs Your Water Heater Needs Attention

Many water heater problems can be diagnosed and repaired in a single visit. Others, especially on older or leaking units, are better addressed with a full replacement. Cleon will assess the situation and give you a clear recommendation before any work begins.

No hot water This is often caused by a failed heating element, thermostat issue or pilot light problem on a gas unit. In some cases a tripped breaker or gas supply interruption is the culprit. Cleon will diagnose the cause before recommending a fix.

Inconsistent water temperature If your hot water runs out faster than it used to or fluctuates during use, the thermostat may need adjustment, or sediment has built up on the bottom of the tank and is reducing its effective capacity.

Leaking tank A tank that is actively leaking from the body almost always needs to be replaced. Leaks from the pressure relief valve or connections may be repairable depending on the condition of the unit.

Rumbling or popping sounds These noises are typically caused by sediment that has settled on the bottom of the tank and is being disturbed as the water heats. Flushing the tank can help, but in older units it often signals the end of the unit's lifespan.

Rusty or discoloured hot water Discolouration in the hot water line is a strong sign that the anode rod is depleted and the tank interior is beginning to corrode. At this stage, replacement is usually the most sensible option.

Unit is 10 or more years old Most tank water heaters have a lifespan of 8 to 15 years depending on water quality and usage. If yours is approaching or past this range and showing any issues, replacement is often more cost-effective than repair.

Repair

If repair is the right call, we replace thermostats, heating elements, pressure relief valves, anode rods or other components to restore reliable hot water without replacing the full unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a hot water tank last?
Most tank water heaters last between 8 and 15 years depending on water quality, usage and maintenance. If your tank is older than 10 years and showing signs of trouble, replacement is often the more cost-effective option.
Should I repair or replace my water heater?
If the tank is leaking from the body, replacement is almost always the right answer. For other issues like inconsistent temperature or unusual sounds, Cleon will assess the unit and give you a straight answer on whether repair or replacement makes more sense for your situation.
Do you install tankless water heaters?
Yes. We install both traditional tank water heaters and tankless on-demand systems. Cleon can help you determine which type is the better fit based on your usage, available space and gas line capacity.
